One question I'm often asked is where I draw my inspiration from with my illustrations. The long answer to that is my sister and I grew up in barber shops and hair salons. My great grandfather was off-the-boat from Italy and owned a barber shop, Mom was a beautician (as it was called when I was a kid) who worked in the same shop as my Aunt. Later on in my childhood, my Uncle opened his own hair salon, and now my daughter is a licensed hairstylist and makeup artist. One thing that stands out from my childhood memories when I'm illustrating is the cool 70's "pop art" style of faces and hairstyles that hung on the walls in one of the salons where Mom worked. Now considered "retro", the colored faces, pouty lips and big hair posters are among my favorite styles to draw inspiration from as you can see in some of my pre-designed logos below.
